Photos from the ongoing Kudzu series:
During summer 2007 I took several road-trips through Virginia, the Carolinas, and Georgia, photographing kudzu all along the way.
Kudzu is an invasive species, originally brought to the US from Japan in the 1880s as an ornamental vine. It is often called "the vine that ate the south." Once kudzu establishes itself in an ecosystem, it rapidly envelopes the landscape, growing as quickly as 12 inches a day.
It is commonly found along roadsides, at the forest's edge, and in empty or abandoned fields.
I look at it as a symbol and metaphor.
